Journey Groups
Vision: We believe discipleship is a journey that cannot be lived alone. We need authentic relationships that encourage us to live out the way of Jesus in our community and world.
Purpose: Journey groups are an intentional effort to foster organic relationships where we challenge and encourage one another to grow as learners of God’s story and our place in it, lovers of God and his creation, and givers of all that we’ve been given.
Strategy: Each journey group consists of three to four of us who meet consistently for an extended period of time (a year to year and a half). Each group will create a covenant together around five core commitments. These commitments will serve as a compass for the journey that helps to direct us by providing focus, clear expectations, and mutual accountability.
The compass includes the following commitments that should be based on the needs of the group:
- Cultivate authenticity by encouraging and challenging each other with honesty and humility
- Expect and desire spiritual transformation as we send each other out as Christ’s disciples in the world
- Focus on a specific study together that we hold each other mutually accountable to
- Pray for one another each time we meet and consistently while we are apart
- Offer ourselves entirely to God and each other until the completion of the journey
Some examples of “specific study” would be
- We want to engage with the scriptures from the sermon and home group every week and wrestle with how God is asking us to apply this to our lives
- We have been wanting to go deeper into understanding God’s heart for justice, so we want to read a book together on it and talk about the implications for our lives
- We have been struggling with understanding our place in God’s story and want to focus on a resource that can help us understand ourselves better to move forward in the future
- We’ve been wanting a smaller group that holds each of us accountable to reading the Bible on our own in a focused way, so we want to go through a book of the Bible together and wrestle with how to apply it to our lives
*We encourage the groups to refocus the covenant at least once every three months to give one another a chance to safely share how we’ve seen each other grow and what direction God is leading us in as we decide how to move forward on the journey.
Journey Group Covenant
The Compass for the Journey
We commit to:
➢ Cultivate authenticity by encouraging each other with honesty and humility.
➢ Expect and desire spiritual transformation as we send each other out as Christ’s disciples in the world.
➢ Focus on a specific area of study together and refocus on a regular basis.
• Our study: __________________________
• Duration: ___________________________
➢ Pray for one another while we meet and while we are apart.
➢ Offer ourselves completely to God and to each other until the completion of this part of our journey.
• How long we will journey?
• When we will meet?
• Where we will meet?
By living out this commitment we expect to help each other grow as learners of God’s story and our place in it, lovers of God and his creation, and givers of all that we have been given for this season of the journey.
